Jack ’n Jill Childcare was started in 1967 in Webster, New York. It was a time when the word “day care” was not yet in our vocabulary. However, a special teacher named Joyce Scamacca saw the need for full day care for children. It was becoming evident as mothers began to enter the workplace, attend college, and have careers outside their homes that full daycare was needed. Morning and afternoon preschool programs were enhanced to provide care throughout the day.
Singing and dancing became an every day occurrence, followed by ABC’s and 1,2,3’s. Socialization was in harmony with learning throughout the day. Soon after, Joyce Scamacca became Joyce LoMonaco and began to expand her family and her business. LoMonaco opened her second center in Greece in 1970, Victor in 1990, and West Irondequoit in 1992.
As the need grew, so too did the programs. The emphasis on “total childhood education” emerged which focused on children learning through doing with a more hands on learning style. Social skills, nutrition, outdoor activities to strengthen muscles, tae kwon do to strengthen spirit, music, pre-math, and the love of reading are all part of children’s daily experience at Jack ’n Jill.
LoMonaco is now semi-retired and acts as our own “Story Lady”, sharing books and intriguing young minds with old and new stories for all to enjoy. Her daughters now continue on in the family business embracing her wealth of knowledge while gaining new insight into the field of early childhood.
Jack ’n Jill proudly boasts second and third generation children, families, and staff as our family continues to grow into the 21st century.
